"It could end up being a long night": Artists Tell Us What 'Freedom Day' Means to Them

Hybrid Minds, René LaVice and more can't wait to get back to playing live again
Luke Nightingale | Features & Interviews

As the so-called 'Freedom Day' in the UK is finally here, we asked nine artists how excited they are for the return of clubbing and live events.

Hybrid Minds

It’s been a long time coming and we are just so excited to be able to get to some outside events this year. It's going to be a real celebration and very emotional for a lot of people. We had some lifetime goals like playing Reading and Leeds postponed last year so we are beside ourselves to be able to make them this time around. Let’s look out and respect each other so we can carry on having fun.

Even though I live in Italy right now, the idea of freedom that the UK is showing us is a beautiful ray of light in a period where anybody doesn’t know where we will go. I would love to stay there to see the happiness in people’s eyes, I think I would never stop partying for a month.

Probably the first venue I would go to would be Digital in Newcastle or maybe The Portal in Birmingham or Printworks in London. It’s a really hard choice and there are so many friends I wish to meet again, you can't even imagine.

I would love to play my new single 'Bla Bla Bla' in front of a big UK crowd, I’m sure the impact would be massive. Sadly I missed my show at Made in Leeds festival with MK, Hannah Wants, Low Steppa and more but I will be back for 2022.

Freedom to dance seems so far away. But with the UK’s 'Freedom Day' now upon us it seems like the light at the end of the tunnel appears much closer. A night out at Printworks, E1 or The Drumsheds in London doesn’t feel far away anymore. I can’t wait to feel the energy. That beautiful dance floor energy. Where we all move as one, enjoying the music, connecting with the DJ, vibing with smiles on our faces. That is priceless and I am counting the minutes to take it all in.

René LaVice

The first thing I’ll be doing on 19th of July is jumping into the car with my friends and heading straight to the beach while blasting our favourite tunes out of the stereo. Then heading straight to whatever gigs that me or my friends will be performing at on that day and popping a bottle with them to celebrate. It could end up being a long night!

The festival I’m missing the most right now is Rampage. I’ve had so many incredible experiences at Rampage, there is a real community around that festival as it’s really important to the main genres I DJ, and the vibes are always incredible. I miss my Rampage family and hope to see all of you soon.

To me this day means we are one step closer to celebrating the music we love in a live setting the way we need to. It means being there for one another in the flesh, and that’s so important to living a good life.

After the last 18 months without events and nightlife it feels so good to finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Living in London, it feels like everyone is absolutely itching to dance again. I’m looking forward to soaking in the inspiration that only a crowded club playing loud music can offer and I’m sure I'm not the only one.

Printworks is one of my favourite venues and I can’t wait to go back. I also can’t wait to see how dance music evolves and changes after the crazy time the music industry has had. Finally, I’ll be heading straight to Ibiza ASAP.

It will be great to get back to some form of normality. It's been a long time coming and I think 'Freedom Day' is hopefully the beginning of that. I've really been waiting for the opportunity to travel internationally again. I am looking forward to getting back over to America. I'm hoping to make it to Elements Festival in Lakewood, Pennsylvania, the lineup looks amazing and it will be great to catch up with some old friends again.

'Ditto' is out now

PRVNA

It’s gonna be amazing to finally meet musicians and producers I’ve met online, especially Devstar who I feel like I’ve known for ages. I’m performing with him at One World Festival at the end of the month on July 31st which is exciting. I can’t wait to start performing live and feeling the crowd. There’s not another buzz like it, I’ll be getting back into performer mode.

Ali Story

Freedom at last! The first thing I’m doing is booking a ticket back home to Ireland to see my family. The last year has been a blessing and a curse in so many ways. It’s given me the time to produce the music I love and secure releases on some of my favourite labels, but it’s kept me apart from the people I love the most. 'Freedom Day' is a huge day for all of us all, but more importantly all of us events people and entertainers out there. We can finally get back to doing what we love and do best.

I’ve got some gigs booked next week in Leicester and Leeds so I am absolutely stoked for those, but most of all I can’t wait to play in Ibiza. The nightlife of Ibiza is famous all across the world, attracting people from every part of the world and has always held a special place in my heart. I honestly cannot wait to see all the smiling faces looking back at me from the dancefloor. Nothing but fun, dancing and positive energy. Let’s go!

'Higher Love' is out 23rd July

Vhyce

Even if I don’t live in the UK, 'Freedom Day' is great news and I hope that clubs and events all over will open again soon. I'm really looking forward to the festivals coming back. My most missed festival is Dour festival here in Belgium. I've been attending every year for almost ten years and it’s always the occasion to see all your friends at once and see new exciting bands.

Also it might sound strange but I never felt the need to make club tracks as much as when the clubs closed. Whilst being inspiring, it still felt odd to make such sounds in a shut down world. Now things are opening again, I'm really looking forward to seeing music in its natural habitat and seeing actual people enjoying it.
